Our Assessment
Few names are as closely associated with the modern premium 1911 as Wilson Combat. What began with Bill Wilson’s work on competition pistols developed into one of the best known American manufacturers of custom and semi custom 1911s, with the company building its reputation around careful fitting, premium components, and configurations tailored to serious use.
The Protector family reflects that philosophy particularly well. Rather than radically changing the 1911 operating system, Wilson Combat refines the platform through component selection, fitting, ergonomics, and features developed over decades of custom pistol building.
This particular Protector II Professional is especially interesting because it was custom ordered rather than simply purchased in a standard catalog configuration.
The accompanying custom work order documents several of those choices. The pistol was ordered with a naked slide, giving it a notably restrained appearance without the prominent slide markings commonly encountered on production pistols. Its upgraded stainless steel finish combines matte bead blasted surfaces with polished flats, creating a subtle contrast while preserving the classic appearance of a stainless 1911.
The custom configuration also incorporates Wilson Combat Bullet Proof components, including the thumb safety and hammer. Additional features include an extended ambidextrous thumb safety, extended beavertail grip safety, front and back strap checkering, beveled magazine well, skeletonized trigger, rear slide serrations, and integral accessory rail.
Chambering the pistol in 9mm and using the Professional’s compact 3.9 inch format moves the design considerably away from the traditional 5 inch .45 ACP Government Model while retaining the fundamental single action architecture that has defined the 1911 for more than a century.
The installed Cherokee Hills figured ash grips add another distinctive element. Their natural figuring contrasts sharply with the stainless steel pistol, while the included grooved G10 Wilson Combat panels allow the pistol’s appearance to be returned to a more contemporary tactical configuration.
Mechanical condition is equally impressive. Slide to frame fit exhibits no perceptible play, while the trigger was evaluated as light and crisp with a particularly clean reset. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and a 10 out of 10 rating.
Overall condition is Excellent, with approximately 98 percent of the original finish remaining. The completeness of the accompanying package adds further interest. In addition to the Wilson Combat range bag and factory paperwork, the pistol retains its custom work order, additional grips, holster, six Wilson Combat magazines, and two Vickers Tactical magazines.
For the Wilson Combat collector, the custom work order is particularly useful because it documents the configuration rather than leaving the pistol’s nonstandard features to interpretation. Together with its stainless finish, naked slide, Bullet Proof components, compact Professional dimensions, and 9mm chambering, it identifies this as an individually specified example of Wilson Combat’s premium 1911 craftsmanship.
