Sights / Optics

Each barrel set features a white front bead mounted in a base at the forward end of the ventilated rib.

A smaller silver colored mid bead is also installed.

Both ribs have a smooth centerline with fine checkering along either side to reduce glare.

A removable sight blinder has been adhered to the left front portion of the rib.

Stock Configuration & Condition

The shotgun is fitted with a checkered English walnut stock featuring a tapered forend, pistol grip with a slight right side palm swell, adjustable comb, and adjustable aluminum buttplate with black rubber recoil pad.

The comb and buttplate are configured with cast off.

Length of Pull: Approximately 15 1/2 Inches

Drop at Front of Comb: Approximately 1 1/2 Inches

Drop at Rear of Comb: Approximately 1 1/2 Inches

Drop at Heel: Approximately 2 1/4 Inches

These measurements are consistent between both barrel sets as currently configured.

The buttstock exhibits scattered scrapes and small compression marks, most of which are light. The forend has a few very small, light dings.

The checkering remains strong.

The recoil pad has grip tape applied to its rear surface and exhibits wear.

Overall stock condition: Fine.

Finish & Overall Condition

Type of Finish: Blue and Nickel

Finish Originality: Original

This shotgun set retains approximately 97 percent of its original metal finish.

Both barrel sets exhibit areas of wear from contact with the forend, concealed when assembled.

The 12 gauge barrel set has scrapes along the sides of the lower barrel, while the sub gauge barrel set exhibits scattered small, light scrapes.

The action shows very light operational wear.

The screw heads remain intact and the markings are clear.

Both barrel sets and the interior of the forend are serial matching to the shotgun.

Overall condition: Fine.

Bore & Mechanics

Bore Condition: The bores are bright with no observed erosion.

The two 28 gauge inserts exhibit fouling near the front of their bores, while the two 20 gauge inserts have stubborn bore fouling.

Despite the observed fouling, the original evaluator rated the bores 10 out of 10.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly during mechanical evaluation.

The shotgun features a mechanical selective trigger and ejectors. When the sub gauge inserts are installed, the ejectors operate as extractors.

The shotgun was not test fired.

Our Assessment

Kolar Arms has established a reputation among competitive shotgun enthusiasts for producing premium American made over/under shotguns designed around precision, durability, and consistency. The Max Skeet reflects that philosophy, incorporating the features and adjustability expected of a dedicated competition shotgun while retaining the traditional craftsmanship of finely finished walnut and metal.

This 2007 example is particularly interesting for its four gauge configuration. The two 30 inch barrel sets, combined with Competition AAA inserts for 20 gauge, 28 gauge, and .410 bore, allow the shooter to compete across the traditional American skeet gauges while retaining the same receiver, trigger, stock, and familiar sight picture. With the 12 gauge configuration weighing 10 pounds, 9.6 ounces and the sub gauge configuration weighing 10 pounds, 9.2 ounces, the difference is just 0.4 ounces. The Briley barrel weights, adjustable comb, cast off stock, and mechanical selective trigger further reflect the attention given to consistent handling and shooter fit.

The shotgun remains in Fine condition, retaining approximately 97 percent of its original blue and nickel finish. Both barrel sets and the forend are serial matching, while the bores remain bright with no observed erosion. The English walnut stock exhibits light handling wear but retains strong checkering and its adjustable competition configuration.

Complete with its fitted Kolar case, additional chokes, tools, and factory paperwork, this Max Skeet represents a well equipped example of a specialized American competition shotgun. Its combination of matched barrel sets, multiple gauges, and carefully configured stock makes it especially noteworthy among firearms built for serious clay target shooting.
