Our Assessment
The Sharps Model 1863 was one of the important breechloading rifle designs of the American Civil War, valued for accuracy, reliability, and faster loading compared with muzzleloaders. Originally designed for paper or linen cartridges and percussion ignition, many Sharps rifles continued to serve after the war, with some converted to metallic cartridge use as ammunition technology advanced.
This example has been converted from percussion to cartridge fire and now wears a 32 inch octagonal barrel chambered in .50-90 Sharps. It retains the classic lever operated falling block action and its original C. Sharps patent receiver marking. Though refurbished and showing honest antique wear, the rifle has a strong bore and clear historical character. It would make an interesting addition to a Sharps, Civil War, buffalo rifle, or early cartridge rifle collection.
