Our Assessment
Introduced by the Remington Custom Shop in the 1950s, the Model 40-X quickly became one of the most respected target rifles in America. Built specifically for competitive shooting, the rifle was engineered around a rigid action, premium trigger system, and heavy target barrel. Long before sub-MOA accuracy became a common marketing term, the 40-X was already delivering the kind of precision serious shooters demanded.
Early rifles utilized the Remington 722 action, while later versions incorporated a highly rigid Model 700-style receiver with a solid bottom configuration. Throughout its production life, the 40-X earned a reputation as one of the premier factory-built target rifles available.
This example has moved beyond its factory roots and into the realm of custom competition rifles. The replacement 22-inch stainless heavy barrel, custom flame-finished stock, and Leupold BR-36X target scope create a purpose-built rimfire platform optimized for precision shooting. Weighing approximately 12 pounds 5 ounces, the rifle offers substantial stability from the bench and should be well suited to target shooting and informal competition.
While collectors seeking an original 40-X may prefer factory configuration examples, shooters looking for a unique and highly specialized rimfire rifle will appreciate the quality components and customization present here. The rifle’s appearance is certainly distinctive, and its combination of custom features and proven Remington 40-X heritage make it a standout piece on any firing line.
