Our Assessment

Few rimfire target rifles have earned the reputation enjoyed by the Anschutz Model 54. Introduced during the 1950s, the Model 54 action quickly became the benchmark for precision smallbore competition. Its combination of exceptional barrel quality, rigid receiver design, and remarkably refined trigger made it the rifle to beat in Olympic, World Championship, NCAA, and national-level competition for generations.

This 1979 West German example represents the classic era of Anschutz target rifle production. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, it features a 27-inch heavy target barrel paired with Anschutz’s renowned aperture sight system, allowing for the precise sight picture demanded in prone, three-position, and international smallbore disciplines.

The highly adjustable walnut Schützen stock further demonstrates the rifle’s competition pedigree. Adjustable cheekpiece, palm rest, buttplate, hand stop, and accessory rail allow the rifle to be precisely fitted to the individual shooter—an important advantage during extended competition where consistency is everything.

Remaining in Excellent condition with approximately 99 percent of its original finish, a pristine bore, and one of the finest factory triggers ever installed in a production rifle, this Model 54 Super Match remains every bit as capable today as when it left West Germany in 1979. Whether destined for serious target shooting or added to a collection of classic competition firearms, it stands as one of the defining rimfire rifles of the twentieth century.
