Our Assessment

Introduced in 1967, the Ruger No. 1 stood apart from contemporary rifle designs at a time when repeating actions dominated the market. Rather than following trends, Ruger leaned into a philosophy of strength, simplicity, and mechanical elegance. The result was a modern falling-block rifle capable of handling powerful cartridges in a compact, well-balanced package.

This 1982 example is chambered in .45-70 Government, a cartridge well suited for large North American game and one that complements the No. 1’s robust action. With its strong bore, high original finish, and classic lines, this rifle embodies the appeal of deliberate, traditional hunting. It would make a fine addition to a Ruger No. 1 lineup or serve as a capable and handsome hunting rifle for the field.
