Our Assessment

The Ruger M77 was introduced in 1968 and has remained a staple among American hunters for decades. In 1991, the design was substantially reworked and reintroduced as the Mark II. The updated model retained the claw extractor while converting the action into a true controlled round feed system. It also incorporated a Mauser style fixed blade ejector and a three position safety that allows the bolt to be operated while the rifle remains on safe.

Chambered in .35 Whelen, this rifle offers serious performance without requiring a magnum length action. Derived from the .30 06 Springfield case and necked up to accept .358 caliber bullets, the .35 Whelen delivers excellent energy and terminal performance on large game while maintaining manageable recoil.

This 2001 manufactured example remains in Fine condition with a strong bore and solid mechanics. For hunters seeking a dependable medium bore rifle in a proven controlled round feed platform, this M77 Mark II represents a practical and capable option.
